One of the products of our time is the academic conference covering an area of scientific thought of current interest. This is followed by the publication of a collection of the papers and discussions from the conference. The resulting book runs a good chance of being second-rate; there can be little control over what subjects are covered and how they are handled by the speakers. As a consequence, the value of such a book frequently lies in the fact that it is one more publication for a goodly number of names in addition to providing obvious reasons for government money to support further conferences. The value to the scholar is often open to question.
