This small book on gastroenterology, published in 1963, had previously escaped my attention and, therefore, my pleasure in its contents was all the greater because it was quite unexpected. The book discusses the diagnosis and treatment of all the common and most of the less common diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, the pancreas, and the biliary tract. It proceeds as the stream of food from mouth to rectum and devotes time to each area in accordance with the frequency with which the problem presents in practice.
Most of the 18 chapters discuss specific diseases or diseases of a specific area. Gastrointestinal hemorrhage, GI problems in systemic disease, and drug reactions receive treatment in separate chapters. The role of radiological intubation, biopsy, and other special techniques are presented in each area and some 60 clear radiograms or line drawings illustrate the points that the author is making.
