The "Treatment of Stroke" contains eight chapters, each by an individual author. Because of the multiple authorship, there is some overlap of material in different chapters and some differences of opinion occur. The inclusion of divergent views is fortunate, since their existence is a matter of fact, and they indicate the inexact state of knowledge concerning certain aspects of treatment. However, it is important that the reader carefully examine all chapters—else he will miss the areas of controversy.

The material is condensed, and some parts lack some practical detail. For example, in the discussion of cerebral edema, "hypertonic mannitol solution, 1.0-1.5 gm/kg body weight..." is the recommended treatment. This cursory account is supplemented by a reference to the pertinent literature—a technique frequently employed throughout the text. The reviewer hopes that readers using the therapeutic methods described will achieve a better mortality for their patients than the 25% ascribed to
