This is not a large book but it is not a slight one. It deals with the many solved and unsolved problems pertaining to acute rheumatic fever: the biology and role of Group A β-hemolytic streptococci, the pathogenesis, pathology, clinical manifestations, treatment, and prophylaxis of acute rheumatic fever, and other related topics. The reader is not befuddled by long recitations of often conflicting observations and opinions, without an attempt on the part of the authors to interpret these data and viewpoints. Dr. Markowitz and Dr. Kuttner have sufficient mastery of the subject so that they are able to summarize the voluminous literature briefly and lucidly and to present their own authoritative judgment regarding disputed problems. This volume is not meant to be an encyclopedic work, but for the reader who is not already an expert on acute rheumatic fever, it is warmly recommended without reservation.
