This book is composed of the more than 30 papers read and the panel discussion held during a two-day conference at the Downstate Medical Center, New York in 1963. Since such conferences are attended only by a limited number of invited participants, the final publication of the papers and of the discussion is a necessity. Although some of the papers have been brought up to date, one realizes that more than two years have elapsed since the conference. Nevertheless, it is of value to the scientific world that this large pool of information and the ferment produced by the discussion has become available. Such a spread of information and of ideas is especially important when, as in this book, the topics have an appeal to a wide spectrum of investigators, from biophysicists to internists and surgeons. Reading the proceedings of a panel discussion is not the same as being present
