Abstract

Some years ago, James Gould Cozzens' novel By Love Possessed appeared amid critical huzza, hailed by one and all as one of the truly great books of our generation. Sometime later, writing in Commentary, Dwight MacDonald reviewed the reviewers and found the novel wanting. As a result, the major newspapers and magazines took another look at the novel and printed what amounted to retractions of their earlier statements.

In June 1966, the Archives of Internal Medicine published my review of Lupus Erythematosus. I had read the book and found myself in disagreement with Dr. Dubois' all-inclusive definition of the disease(s). This philosophical disagreement perhaps blinded me to the good features of the volume. Rereading it, and, more important, using it as a reference work, I am convinced that it serves many uses for the clinician.
