After a brief interregnum, attendant upon my resignation, the Archives of Internal Medicine has a new Chief Editor, Dr. Morton Bogdonoff. During this interim AMA staff members of the Division of Scientific Publications and the Editorial Board of the Archives kept the keel steady. Now once more the crew has a regular captain. Those who know something of editorial problems have known that it is unrealistic for anyone to attempt creative editing in time stolen from running a busy department of internal medicine, especially in a time of multiplex medical and social revolutions. A journal is never any better than the material which comes to the editor and may be a deal worse if selection is bad. Lots of disappointed writers of rejected papers agree. But an editor must generate manuscripts by stimulating and keeping pressure to get the right contributors to send them in.
