LAST month both Drs. Talbott and Bean were kind enough to announce my appointment to the job of Chief Editor of this journal with words of praise and expectant hope (and twice with my name in over-sized, boldface type!). My thanks to them for their comments and blessings. The job of editing a scientific journal requires the very best of sponsorship. After the preliminary good wishes, however, the actual job at hand must begin. The merit and utility of this journal ultimately will depend upon the interest and contributions of the working members of the scientific community. As an additional introduction of the new editor to this community of workers, let me place on the record what the editor feels is important in the design and structure of this medical journal.
First, the major purpose of the Archives is to provide a mechanism for education. The journal is the medium,
