Abstract

Contributors to this book are American (Burton, Cornwell, Kinsell, and Kritchevsky), Canadian (Rossiter), German (Fuhrmann, Kahlke, Schettler, Schlierf, Stoffel, and Wagener) and Israelian (Shapiro). The volume represents a solid text combining American clarity with German thoroughness. Two main parts deal with lipids and with lipidoses. As for the lipids, the biochemistry of mammalian lipids, triglycerides, steroids, phosphatides, sphingosine-containing lipids, and lipoproteins are dealt with in separate chapters. No doubt these represent distinguished contributions, but the chemistry goes beyond the horizon of most clinicians. The same applies to a chapter on methodology.

With regard to the lipidoses, Tay-Sachs disease, Gaucher's disease, Niemann-Pick disease, metachromatic leucodystrophy, Fabrey's disease, Refsum's disease, essential hypercholesterolemia, and essential hyperlipemia are treated in some detail and brought up-to-date. The same is the case with a β-lipoproteinemia and Tangier disease.

A concluding chapter on the genetic aspects of lipid disorders (by Fuhrmann) may to some extent be considered
