Doctor Lowry has compiled and edited this interesting monograph on the physiology and psychology of hyperventilation and the relationship to the mind-body problem.
There are five other contributors who have written on such subjects as the history of hyperventilation, physiology of hyperventilation, psychodynamic aspects of respiration, conversion hysteria, and the electroencephalogram. Also included are two studies: one is concerned with hyperventilation in military recruits; the other discusses the Minnesota Multiphasic personality inventory in patients with hyperventilation.
In general the book is well designed. There are references for each chapter with a total of approximately 400. They are current through 1966. This is a very readable book and covers many aspects of the problem of hyperventilation. It has a very strong orientation toward the psychiatric aspects of hyperventilation. This book will be of value to those interested in this specific problem.
