For the physician the hope and promise of contemporary molecular and developmental biology is that the intimate nature of disease will be revealed and from this understanding a more rational approach to prevention and treatment will emerge. Unfortunately, this ambitious book reveals how far we are from this ideal. This is not to the discredit of the author or a disparagement of his volume but only an indication of the magnitude of the information gap. Professor Bolande has perhaps made as successful an interpretation of pediatric pathology as is possible at the present moment. He has always sought to penetrate beyond the strictly morphological to the functional and biochemical basis for structural change.
