In 1968, an International Symposium on the Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy was sponsored by the Public Health Service. If this symposium accomplished nothing else, it produced a text recording the opinions and statistics presented there. It represents an in-depth, single-source reference of current experience with the problems inherent in the description and management of diabetic retinopathy.

Initial chapters deal with description and natural history of the effect of diabetes upon the eye. A method for descriptive classification of retinopathy was agreed upon and is outlined. This classification, or some modification of it, will probably be the basis for comparing current and future results in the study of diabetic retinopathy.

The bulk of the text is comprised of studies of clinical experience and therapy. These range from methods for total, or subtotal pituitary ablation, to the therapeutic effects of photocoagulation of the retina.
