This book is the ninth yearly volume of a series of publications devoted to psychiatric therapy. In the initial volume in 1961, it was explained that the publications were to include (a) special contributions from experts in psychotherapeutic sub-specialties, (b) annual summaries of the current status and recent advances in such areas as psychoanalysis, brief psychotherapy, family and group therapies, somatic therapies, etc, (c) condensations of some of the better communications on therapy which were presented during the year at national meetings, and (d) reviews by the editor of pertinent topics otherwise not covered. It was stressed at that time that the emphasis would be placed upon techniques of therapy, and that general discussions, introductions, summaries, and bibliographies would be minimized. A review of this particular volume must be seen in the context of the whole series which, during the ensuing years, have maintained their original format and intent.
