It is terrible form for an editor to review his own book (!!). But how about a book that has several hundred authors (of whom you are just one)— and you are convinced that this is one of the most important books to appear in recent years—and you want to assure it an eye-catching review in a prominent journal? (And you just happen to be a book review editor.)

The AMA Drug Evaluations is the pride and joy of the AMA Department of Drugs and Council on Drugs. In my opinion it represents one of the most significant contributions to American medicine made by the American Medical Association in the past decade.

I will not regale you with the details of blood, sweat, and tears—the dollars and the hours—the anxieties, determination, and dedication that went into this book. But I can assure you that it was a monumental effort from many
