Clinicians and investigators interested in hepatology should peruse these proceedings of the conference on the hepatic circulation and portal hypertension held in October 1969, cosponsored by the New York Academy of Sciences and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. Thirty communications by recognized authorities are published; about a third are basically oriented; the remainder clinical. Discussions follow most of the communications. A few give valuable perspective and critical evaluations of a subject.
Anatomical and morphological topics include the gross and microscopic vascular anatomy of the liver, effects of altered oxygen supply on hepatocytes, microcirculatory basis for portal hypertension, and mechanisms of hepatic fibrogenesis. Physiological communications discuss tracer dilution techniques for the study of hepatic membrane transport, the application of Michaelis-Menten kinetics to dye, dilution curves, the pulmonary circulation in portal hypertension and abnormalities of the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve in cirrhosis.
