Abstract

This book is in essence a compendium of the papers presented at the first International Symposium on Osteoporosis held at the Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center in New York in June 1969. Some of the important papers were not included, but most of the discussion after each presentation and several summaries have been retained. These seem to emphasize the lack of unanimity of opinion as to the cause and most effective forms of therapy for this common metabolic bone disorder.

In some ways this book is similar to the annual volumes "Recent Progress in Hormone Research," which publish the papers and discussions of the Laurentian Hormone Conferences. It is by no means to be considered a textbook for students or general physicians interested in bone disorders since it is not well organized, omits many detailed aspects of the newer forms of treatment of osteoporosis such as fluoride, phosphate and calcitonin,
