This book is a series of 16 lectures presented at a course or symposium in Leiden, Netherlands, in October 1969. The participants include eight from each of the medical faculties of Edinburgh and Leiden. Presumably, the selection of topics depended upon the interests of the faculty members. Thus, subject matter varies widely, and I must object to the all-inclusive title which has been given to this series of rather selective lectures. One might assume from the title that the book contained a compact discussion of the entire field.
There is no index, although most but not all of the articles have a list of references. The lectures are a peculiar mixture of informal comments, clinical impressions, and analytical scientific data. This is not necessarily all bad, there are certain advantages (and disadvantages) to this approach. The opinions of experienced clinicians are usually interesting and frequently helpful.
