Abstract

It is now seven years since the third edition of Drill's Pharmacology in Medicine was published, and the present edition is a timely revision of a book which has acquired an enviable reputation. Under the capable editorship of Professor DiPalma, this tradition is continued and strengthened in the fourth edition, and in my opinion it now rivals Goodman and Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Medicine as a reference text for pharmacologists and clinicians alike. Pharmacology is a rapidly developing subject, and there is a growing gulf between basic pharmacology and what may be called "medical" pharmacology. It could be said that this book is not pharmacological enough for the basic pharmacologist, and too pharmacological for the inquisitive clinician. Nevertheless, it is a vital link which will preserve and strengthen the precarious relationship between basic pharmacology and the realities of modern medical practice.
