Abstract

This volume is a second edition, the first having appeared some six years ago. Considerable new case material has been introduced along with added material on psychiatric aspects of coma and the diagnosis of brain death.

The anatomical-pathological bases of stupor and coma are discussed at length, with attention to respiration, pupils, eye signs, muscle behavior and electroencephalograph phenomena.

The specific backgrounds of coma are arranged under headings of supratentorial lesions, subtentorial lesions, metabolic encephalopathy, and psychogenic unresponsiveness.

There is a massive bibliography of more than 600 references.

This would appear to be a very useful volume for those who deal with clinical material, not only in neurology and neurosurgery but in internal medicine as well. It would be an excellent reference text for the Emergency Room Services of all general hospitals.
