The fifth edition of Modern Nutrition in Health and Disease has been completely reorganized and largely rewritten. Dr. Shils has replaced Dr. Wohl as coauthor. Although there has been expansion of subject matter to bring the volume up to date, the reorganization of material and a devoted use of a blue pencil in deleting duplications and redundancy has resulted in a book that is readable and easily used as a reference and, as an extra bonus, is 100 pages shorter than the 1968 edition. As with previous editions, this is a compilation of chapters by many authors. More than 30 new names appear, most of them as replacements for authors contributing to earlier editions. Although any book of this magnitude will be more than a year in preparation after the manuscript has been submitted to the publisher, the currentness of the subject matter is notable in a field growing as
