This book covers the proceedings of the First International Gstaad Symposium organised by the Swiss Society for Gastroenterology and held in Gstaad, September 12 to 14,1972. Any attempt to quantatate liver structure and function is laudable, and the speakers at this meeting made a brave attempt. They were largely from Europe but included such experts as L.J. Schoenfeld on biliary kinetics and N.B. Javitt on monohydroxy bile acids. Much of the European material will not be familiar to a North American audience. However, a careful search of the literature will show that almost all of it has now been published as original articles, for the meeting took place two years ago. The volume is therefore of limited interest. It is too specialized for the generalist, and the original investigator will already be aware of most of the material presented at this meeting.
