Abstract

As an endoscopic atlas, this volume ranks as one of the better ones on the market. Because of its cost, a few preliminary comments are in order to prevent the "casual" endoscopist from making a purchase fraught with dissatisfaction. This is a reference for the serious endoscopist who will overlook the stiffly formal literary style and appreciate the meticulous care expended by the authors in compiling an outstanding collection of endoscopic photos and accompanying technical narrative. It is also unfortunate that a good deal of the discussion on technique applies to endoscopes (Machida) that are not generally available in this country. There is sufficient comparison with standard instruments (Olympus), however, to establish a common ground for understanding.

The chapters on endoscopic amputation of gastric polyps and direct vision cytology are both good, while the chapters on gastric cancer are, as expected, outstanding. While one could fault a number of minor
