We sincerely regret that Dr Lastnick interpreted our article as denigrating and a negative reflection on the contributions of American FMGs and their devotion to this country. We, as most Americans, are descendants of immigrants from various lands.Our paper addresses the following issues in a positive and, we believe, constructive manner:
Stresses the commitment and obligation of the US medical schools and teaching hospitals to provide for FMGs the same standards of graduate medical education as US medical graduates by either terminating inadequate programs or upgrading and integrating existing programs.
Supports the recommendations of the 1965 National Commission on Health Manpower and the Guidelines of the AMA Council on Medical Education to provide general orientation programs and to familiarize FMGs with the provisions of the US health care system.
Calls for medical schools to offer continuing education courses for practicing FMGs who have experienced
