Abstract

• Obstructive airways diseases constitute 75% of all chronic respiratory diseases. This article briefly reviews the physiologic basis for flow limitation in large and small airways. Application of the physiologic principles described can lead to a better understanding of the normal mechanics of breathing and the various alterations resulting from diseases that limit airflow.
