In an attempt to improve liver function and promote [ill]atic regeneration in a patient with severe liver injury, [ill]lin alone or insulin and glucagon were administered by [ill]stant peripheral venous infusion during a 61-day period. [ill] response, as assessed by a broad spectrum of hepato[ill]lular function tests, including synthetic, detoxification, bile [ill]abolism, and microsomal enzyme function, and also histo[ill]cal evidence, indicated a beneficial effect. Continuous [ill]ulin and glucagon infusion merits further evaluation in the [ill]tment of some forms of hepatic failure.
