My interest in the German health system sprang from experiences I had as a military physician in Germany from 1991 to 1994. As any first-time visitor to another country will report, I was surprised to find just how different things were from back home. Writing about Germany in particular was difficult because the system itself is in the throes of marked changes. I greatly appreciate Knuth and colleagues' update on how the system is currently structured, more recent figures on a number of parameters of their system, and clarification on several points from people who understand the system better than an auslander ever could.
