We read with interest the review by Gaster and Holroyd1 on St John's wort for mental depression and the correspondence on the matter by Cheng2 and by Vormfelde and Poser.3 We agree with Vormfelde and Poser that the reference list of the article by Gaster and Holroyd is not up to date; however, Vormfelde and Poser also do not seem to be aware that the effect of Hypericum perforatum extract and hyperforin on serotonin (and dopamine) uptake has recently been questioned, thus raising doubts about the role that neurotransmitter uptake inhibition may have in the antidepressant effect of St John's wort.4
