This volume is the "Annual Review of Physiology" just as there are other similar "Annual Review" titles. It contains the usual collection of topics culled from the standard textbooks of physiology. This is a collection of dry, eviscerated, and nonproductive pages filled with a depressing smattering of wordage better fitted for a dictionary of science than for the edification and stimulation of scientists. It is high time that the editors and reviewers of these magnificent repossessions of the indexes of medical literature took serious evaluation of their responsibilities and called for reviews which would indicate the progress, the direction, and the purpose of current research. Such reviewers are especially to be desired in view of the multitudinous mass of condensed, stultified, and repetitious research papers now being published.
