Rapidly evolving technologies and key discoveries in pathophysiology have accelerated the understanding of seizure disorders faster than ever. This is a welcome change for a group of conditions that saw a number of fits and starts of discovery, but otherwise remained elusive despite decades of intense study. It is also perfect timing for the most recent National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke declarations of research benchmarks for epilepsy, including advancing the understanding of epilepsy and its comorbid conditions, the prevention of epilepsy, improving treatment options while limiting adverse effects, and mitigating the adverse consequences of seizures. This Viewpoint will describe recent advances and future prospects that are aligning to help realize these goals.
