It is that time of year again. Another cohort of college graduates seeks admission to medical school, and somewhere along the way, the applicants will be asked the question, “Why do you want to be a physician?” When I first started to be asked the question, as I call it, I disliked it because I found it intrusive. When I eventually found myself on the other side of the conversation, asking the question, I objected to it because I found it unrevealing. Recently, however, I have come to appreciate the question for what the answer can reveal.
