JOHANNES M. Nielsen, MD, indomitable in his work, unyielding to physical disability, died on Dec 12, 1969, of a cerebrovascular accident. He had been in active practice up to three days before his death.
Dr. Nielsen was born in Aarslev, Denmark, on Oct 17, 1890. His family immigrated to Perth Amboy, NJ, when he was 5 years of age. Circumstances forced him to seek employment when quite young, and by the time he reached the age of 17 he had become a master carpenter.
Realizing that early retirement was customary in the construction business and despite the fact that he was the sole support of his mother and sisters, he decided on a medical career, because of the challenge it offered. High school and college requirements were obtained by virtue of hard work which by now was his pattern of life. He attended the University of Chicago Medical School,
