Abstract

Rats fed hexachlorophene developed polyneuropathy that was related to dose and time of exposure. Rats fed larger doses had hind-limb wasting and weakness. The motor conduction velocities of sciatic nerves were decreased. The nerves were edematous, and less myelin could be recovered from them. Within a week after discontinuation of hexachlorophene feeding, neuromuscular dysfunction cleared and the nerve conduction velocities returned to normal.
