Abstract

New editors usually succumb to the temptation to advise their authors on the principles of good writing. They often end up with a spate of letters to the editor pointing out the errors and inadequacies of their advice article. It is somewhat like giving instructions on the use of hand grenades: your mistakes are quickly made known to you. Fortunately, I will not burden you with a recap of Strunk and White, Gowers, Safire, and Fowler. However, my more learned associate editor David Goldblatt, MD, will be contributing a series of articles, "Writing About Writing," to the Archives. You may pummel him all you wish.

I do make one plea when you are submitting an article to a journal: be brief, clear, and follow the "Instructions for Authors" for that journal. Editors are human (I know that comes as a surprise), and the less hassle he or she has the
