Abstract

This is a fine collection of photomicrographs obtained by Bilbao (neuropathology) at St Michaels Hospital, Toronto, Ontario, over a span of 22 years. He has collaborated with Midroni (neurology) and Cohen in producing a combination atlas of the neuropathology of nerve and a text dealing with both clinical neurology and pathology of nerve. The most impressive feature of the book is the collection of light and electron photomicrographs of the pathologic changes in nerve. Many of the illustrations are splendid and informative. Insufficient attention is given to assessment and routine use of teased fibers and variability of nerve fiber number and size distribution (morphometry) with age and disease. It is somewhat surprising that primary nerve tumors were not included. The text is thorough and comprehensively referenced. Neurologists (pathologists or neuropathologists) evaluating nerve biopsy specimens will want to own this book, because it provides broad documentation of the pathologic alterations of
