2nd ed, by Stirling Carpenter and George Karpati, 662 pp, with illus, $165, New York, NY, Oxford University Press Inc, 2001.
This is the second edition of the well-established reference work on skeletal muscle pathology. It has been long awaited and a pleasure to read. This edition skillfully reflects the many advances that have occurred in the field of neuromuscular disease since the first edition of this work, published in 1984.
The book is divided into 2 sections: "Structures and Pathologic Reactions" and "Diseases of Skeletal Muscle." Both sections are impressive in their scope. Noteworthy subjects of discussion in the first section include necrosis, apoptosis, cytoskeleton, myofibrils, nuclei, mitochondria, sarcolemma, sarcoplasmic reticulum and transferase tubular system system, abnormal organellar structures, and relevant nonmuscle structures. Methods of tissue removal, tissue preparation, and muscle biopsy interpretation are also discussed. The second section is divided into genetic, storage, and sporadic diseases of skeletal muscle. Not surprisingly, a number of diseases are included that were not in the first edition. All diseases are listed alphabetically within each subsection, an improvement on the previous edition's contents, where all diseases were listed alphabetically under a general heading. Excellent discussions in the second section include centronuclear and myotubular myopathies, congenital muscular dystrophies, desminopathy, nemaline myopathies, channelopathies, dystrophinopathies, myotonic dystrophy, and inflammatory myopathies.
