edited by Andrew G. Engel, MD, and Clara Franzini-Armstrong, PhD, 2000 pp, with illus, $395, ISBN 0-07-137180-X, New York, NY, McGraw-Hill Co, 2004.
The first edition of this masterly set was published in 1986. It comprised about 2000 pages. The accumulated information since then has burgeoned, but the editors have managed to keep the jumbo book at the same length in 2 volumes. The concept is simple—the editors assembled experts in everything about normal muscle development, anatomy, cell biology, biochemistry, and physiology to provide detailed descriptions in volume 1. Approaches to diagnosis are included for clinical examination, electrodiagnosis, muscle imaging, energetics, muscle biopsy, immunology, and molecular genetics.
