To the Editor Lu et al1 recently reported that patients who had received a diagnosis of cancer had increased risks of several common mental disorders from the year before diagnosis. According to the authors, the onset of mental disorders in the prediagnostic period could be explained by an early debut of cancer symptoms and the effect of psychological stress experienced during the diagnostic workup. We believe that another explanation may exist.
