Insights From a Patient With Lung Cancer—Party Therapy Is Way Better Than Chemotherapy

Dorothy and I never actually met. We spoke via telephone when she was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer, and our relationship settled into one in which I would email answers to her questions and she would send me jars of homemade jam.

She was a nonsmoker and her cancer fortunately demonstrated an epidermal growth factor receptor mutation. She responded dramatically to treatment with gefitinib and enjoyed 2 years in remission. However, new symptoms were followed by radiographic scans that revealed disease progression.
