Thanks to great personal discipline, problem-solving skills, and hundreds of volunteers who have assisted me in managing extremely brittle type 1 diabetes mellitus complicated by total blindness, I am a medical educator and science administrator who has earned 5 Ivy-League degrees, published in the academic literature,1 and traveled around the world. Given my experience as well as published data2,3 and data available on request, I believe that programs must be created to improve medical students' and physicians' ability to empathize with their patients' extraclinical needs.
