We agree that Drs Witschel and Sundmacher provided important evidence
of the epithelial genesis of granular corneal dystrophy in their 1979 article,
and we appreciate their letter calling our attention to this fact. Their article
also provided a useful review of older literature on the histopathology of
granular dystrophy, which had led some authors to the reasonable but incorrect
conclusion that the stromal deposits were produced by the keratinocytes rather
than by the epithelial cells.
