Association Between Rate of Binocular Visual Field Change and Vision-Related Quality of Life: Novel Finding or Spurious Association?

Writing Committee for the European Glaucoma Panel
JAMA Ophthalmol. 2014;132(6):784-785. doi:10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2013.8249

To the Editor During the recent meeting of the European Glaucoma Panel, we discussed with interest the article by Lisboa et al.1 Their conclusion that the rate of binocular visual field (BVF) change was significantly associated with abnormal vision-related quality of life (VRQOL) is potentially of importance; however, we do not believe the study design and analysis are adequate to support the conclusion. A number of flaws in the study design suggest that these results may not be replicated if other investigators were to attempt to reproduce their findings in similar cohorts with VRQOL data.
