Dr LeClaire1 suggests that the association between the incidence of macular degeneration and prior cataract surgery found in the Beaver Dam Eye Study may not be a causative one, in that visual symptoms resulting from maculopathy may have been incorrectly attributed to cataract, prompting the surgical intervention. This is a possible explanation of our finding.
