Amin et al1 are to be commended for
bringing to our attention a serious adverse effect of fomivirsen sodium, a
phosphorothioate antisense oligonucleotide compound recently approved for
the treatment of cytomegalovirus retinitis. Their clinical case report published
in the ARCHIVES clearly illustrates the potential for widespread retinal pigment
epithelial change. The package label for fomivirsen indicates that in addition
to intraocular inflammation, retinal pigment changes may occur. Their case
is an example of this and documents severe peripheral vision loss.
