Fight for Sight organization that provides funding for vision research, awarded Stephen J. Ryan, MD, $50 000 as the first winner of the Fight for Sight/Mildred Weisenfeld Award for Lifetime Achievement in Vision Research. The award was presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in Dallas, Tex, during October 2000. Dr Ryan is internationally recognized as a groundbreaking expert in treating retinal and macular disease and ocular trauma; he has authored more than 240 papers internationally on these subjects. He is currently the dean of the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, as well as senior vice president for medical care. He is also president of the Doheny Eye Institute, Los Angeles, and a Grace and Emery Beardsley Professor of Ophthalmology.
