The Emergence of Private Equity in Ophthalmology

Controversy over a recent article published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology1 and the subsequent concern due to its temporary removal has garnered national attention.2 The article, which has since been reinstated with revised language, was an analysis of the association between private equity (PE) and dermatology. The controversy over the article was prompted by the naming of specific providers and PE firms that have acquired dermatology practices. The primary concern regarded the conclusions that PE firms may be overlooking suspect billing practices and rewarding high-volume outlier practices.
