The publication of Frederick Blodi's landmark translation of Julius Hirschberg's History of Ophthalmology, in 11 volumes, took place from 1982 to 1994. This enhanced the already increasing interest in the history of our specialty. Two volumes are now being published that enhance the work of Hirschberg, which had encompassed ophthalmology through 1911. The present pair of books was written by Hugo Magnus, professor of ophthalmology at the University of Breslau, Germany, and was first published in 1901. Magnus' writings complement those of Hirschberg by incorporating more of the primary reference material.
