The letter from Dr Kottow raises 2 questions that we will address separately. Patent laws are different in different countries; thus, the conditions under which patents are granted vary. The patent in question was mentioned in our article in compliance with the requirements of the ARCHIVES. This journal is not the right place to discuss the patentability of a given invention, and we do not feel qualified to make valid judgments in this matter. Such question are handled by patent lawyers specially trained in their profession and by examiners of national agencies. The laws of which we are aware in all countries permit everyone to appeal any patent if the individual considers the patent unjustified or infringing on the rights of others.
