MECHANISMS OF microaneurysm formation in nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy include local structural weakness in the vessel wall with subsequent dilatation and focal vascular endothelial cell proliferation.1 Either or both mechanisms maycontribute to aneurysm formationbecause some aneurysms are hypercellular, whereas others are thin-walled or hypocellular.1 We addressed these possibilities using histochemical markers of endothelial cells and cellular proliferation in human diabetic retinas.
