Sir Stewart Duke-Elder (1898-1978) of the Institute of Ophthalmology in London was perhaps the world's most famous ophthalmologist of his generation, known for his contributions as a scientist, clinician, leader, and author of rare talent. He is best known for his 7-volume Textbook of Ophthalmology, which was followed by his monumental 15-volume System of Ophthalmology. He was knighted in 1933 for successfully operating on the British prime minister, Ramsey MacDonald, and was ophthalmologist to King Edward VIII, King George VI, and Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.
