Arnall Patz, MD, was not a big man; he was a giant among us. His impact was magnified by his spirit of caring toward everyone he met—most importantly, his family. For those of us who knew him, that love of family seemed to spread to us as well as to his patients.
Arnall certainly considered the well-being of his patients an important responsibility, second only to his family (for photographs of Arnall at his family's summer home in Maine, see eFigure 1 and eFigure 2). An appointment with Arnall meant a discussion not only about eye problems but also about family and personal life. This people-oriented focus made him a great doctor and an exceptional researcher and teacher.
